Warner Bros. telah mengumumkan dalam rangka memperingati 50 tahun usia 2001: A Space Odyssey, sebuah film ikonik karya Stanley Kubrick yang dirilis di tahun 1968, maka akan dirilis Blu-ray versi restorasi 4K untuk film tersebut dengan tajuk 50th Anniversary Edition.

Perilisan ini diawasi langsung oleh sineas kenamaan sekaligus fans film klasik tadi, Christopher Nolan, yang bulan lalu melakukan penayangan versi orisinal 2001: A Space Odyssey di festival film Cannes. Versi film yang tidak direstorasi namun dihadirkan dalam cetak 70mm baru tersebut kemudian tayang terbatas di beberapa bioskop.

Kini, menyusul kemudian versi Blu-ray 4K dan juga versi standar, yang akan dirilis pada tanggal 30 Oktober mendatang. Berikut pernyataan Nolan yang bertugas sebagai penyelia perilisan ulang film:

 “2001 to me is the most cinematic film that has ever been made and it has been an honour and a privilege to be able to share the film with a new generation. 4K UHD allows the closest recreation of viewing the original film print in your own home. Kubrick’s masterpiece was originally presented on large format film and the deeper colour palette and superior resolution comes closest to matching the original analogue presentation.”

Nolan, yang berkolaborasi bersama tim dari Warner Bros., memantau langsung proses mastering 2001: A Space Odyssey untuk bersi 4K UHD dengan sumber berasal dari negatif 65mm orisinalnya. Hasil akhirnya akan menghadirkan audio remix maupun restorasi berkualitas 5.1 DTS-HD.
