Setelah dinominasikan sebanyak 14 kali, Roger Deakins akhirnya berhasil memenangkan piala Best Cinematography dari ajang The 90^th Annual Academy Awards. Deakins memenangkan kategori tersebut untuk film arahan Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

Selain berita kemenangan Deakins – yang sebenarnya juga telah diekspektasi oleh banyak pihak, The 90^th Annual Academy Awards tidak banyak memberikan banyak kejutan berarti pada barisan pemenangnya. Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, 2017) meraih penghargaan Best Director, Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour, 2017) memenangkan Best Actor in a Leading Role, Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, 2017) memenangkan Best Actress in a Leading Role, Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) memenangkan Best Actor in a Supporting Role dan Allison Janney (I, Tonya, 2017) memenangkan kategori Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Penghargaan Best Picture yang semenjak awal memang masih terbuka untuk dimenangkan setiap film kontendernya akhirnya berhasil diraih oleh The Shape of Water. Selain memenangkan Best Picture dan Best Drector, film yang dibintangi Sally Hawkins tersebut juga berhasil memenangkan Best Production Design dan Best Original Score untuk tata musik garapan Alexandre Desplat.

Secara keseluruhan, seperti dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, pihak Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences membagi rata pemenang Academy Awards dengan The Shape of Water meraih empat penghargaan kemudian disusul oleh Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan, 2017) dengan tiga penghargaan serta Blade Runner 2049, Coco (Lee Unkrich, Darla K. Anderson, 2017), Darkest Hour (Joe Wright, 2017), dan Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Martin McDonagh, 2017) masing-masing merebut dua penghargaan.
